Yes, I'm still feeling sorry for myself - been trying to fight off this cold/cough/congestion for over a week now, but it's very reluctant to shift. I've found it really hard to sleep as every time I lie down, I start coughing. Jo told me on Monday my cough "wasn't very productive" - by this, I assume she meant not enough phlegm? (note to self - check derivation of phlegmatic - how could it possibly be connected to phlegm?)
Wandering off at a tangent, Wikipedia describes phlegmatic as one of the 4 temperaments - "Phlegmatics tend to be self-content and kind. They can be very accepting and affectionate. They may be very receptive and shy and often prefer stability to uncertainty and change. They are very consistent, relaxed, rational, curious, and observant, making them good administrators. However they can also be very passive-aggressive."
Do you know what the other 3 temperaments are? No, neither did I, but apparently they are sanguine, choleric and melancholic - check them out.
Getting back to my blogging diary, I hope I'm on the mend - I'd certainly like to be fully fit for our golf holiday in Turkey next week. I haven't been able to take any exercise this week, but I thought it might be a good idea to nip down to Bannatyne's yesterday and spend some time in the steam room, to see if that would help ease my congestion. I certainly felt a bit better at the time, but whether it lasts or not, I'm not sure.
Back home, I dosed myself with more Lemsip before bed, and Jo dug out some jars of Vick for my chest and an inhaler to ease my nasal passages. I certainly did seem to sleep a little better - although I was still up just after 5 am again.
I realise now I'm becoming more like Dad every day - hopefully I'm not quite at the dementia stage yet, but I'm now taking so many pills and medicines, it's very easy to lose the plot - have I had that one or not? Just ask Jo - she understands. I always used to hate popping pills - I didn't like the idea of pumping unnecessary chemicals in to my body - but, as you get holder and start off on the medical treadmill, so the number of prescriptions increases. Take a look at my current daily dosage:
- Aspirin
- Beta blocker - 10 mg (1 @ 7.5 + 1 @ 2.5)
- Cod liver oil (voluntary)
- Effervescent Vitamin C (voluntary)
- Iron pill (temporary, hopefully) - 3 times per day
- Statin
- Lemsip (temporary)
- Vick (temporary)
- Vick inhaler (temporary)
Then there's the cream I've got to take to accelerate the rate of healing on my gum so that my eye tooth implant can be finished off in June. The crunch time comes when they have to start supplying my pills in daily time slot capsules - Monday breakfast, Monday lunchtime, Monday bedtime, Tuesday breakfast etc - just like poor Dad had to. Then I'll know I've lost it completely - or will I?
Anyway, back to yesterday - I was a little later home than normal as I met the guys for a beer and to check with those that are heading off to Turkey that they were all organised OK. Guess where we met? - Scott Skinner's! Haven't been there regularly for years, as the ale has been so poor, but I sampled it recently and it was OK, so I thought I would try again last night - and it was alright, so I think it's now officially back on the rota again. Mind you, my taste buds probably aren't at their best just now!
When I did get home, Jo and I watched the first instalment of Treme, the New Orleans based drama on Sky Atlantic. Unfortunately, I noticed that episode 3 failed to record so I guess we're going to have to miss one.
Nothing stays the same - the Tor-na-Coille garage closed its doors on Monday morning - the entrances are all taped up now, like a police crime scene. It will be interesting to see what they do with the site. Coincidentally, the following article appeared yesterday in the local P & J:
Is this as innocent an application as it seems - or is it the thin end of the wedge? Do I object or not? I haven't checked the web site yet, but I bet they're building them where they demolished the squash courts - if so, there could be an emotional objection!
